The Alta Ranch is tucked away 27 miles south of Darby in the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains, an ideal vacation spot between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone. The ranch features six deluxe log cabins on 350 acres.  About a mile of the West Fork of the Bitterroot River flows through the ranch. The flyfishing is fantastic. The catch and release pond with monster rainbow trout has a rowboat, canoe and paddle boat. Three other wildfowl ponds are at the north end of the ranch.There are two corrals and many trails on the ranch and adjacent National Forest for guests who want to bring their own horses or ride with an outfitter who brings horses to the ranch.  Family reunions, weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, and religious or business retreats are special occasions on the ranch and we can accommodate a total of 45 overnight guests.

View elk, whitetail, moose, bald eagles, and other wildlife from the porch of your private, hand-hewn log cabin nestled in the pines. Go canoeing, gold panning, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing, or relax and roast marshmallows by the outdoor campfire.  Schedule horseback trail rides or a float trips with an outfitter or visit the local historic attractions, including he first ever ranger station ever built in the USA that is just up the road. The six charming, fully furnished, log cabin vacation homes vary in size; the largest can accommodate twelve. Cabins feature a wood stove in the living room, a fully equipped kitchen and gas barbecue grill, 2-4 bedrooms (linens provided), 1-3 bathrooms (towels provided), covered porch, laundry, and private campfire site. 

The ranch is open all year. A minimum stay of three nights is preferred. Rates vary from $125 to $400 a night depending on the season.

Alta Vista

Alta Vista is a large, luxury cabin surrounded by pines and overlooking the river, a small pond, huge meadow and mountains where deer, moose, and elk roam.  The cabin is ideal for family reunions and weddings.  It features a large porch, on the main floor, huge open concept great room and kitchen, living room, fireplace, 2 bedrooms on the main floor, master suite on the lower floor with private porch, loft bedroom with porch and office upstairs, and 3 full bathrooms. It has a washer/dryer, WIFI, and satellite TV.

Moose Crossing

Moose Crossing is the charming cabin next door to Alta Vista with corral. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, fully-equipped kitchen and living room with gas fireplace. It also has a washer/dryer and satellite TV. There is a stunning view of the river and meadow from the front porch, ideal for watching the abundant wildlife.

Bunkhouse

The Bunkhouse is also in this complex and features a ping pong, foos ball and pool table and bunk bed.

Cottonwood

The Cottonwood cabin is secluded and quiet overlooking the large meadow, river, pond and mountains.  The cabin comes with a fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, outdoor fire pit and BBQ on the wraparound porch.  It sleeps 8 people.

 Aspen

The Aspen cabin sleeps four people and is ideal for honeymooners or outdoor enthusiasts who want to fly fish, hike, or go horseback riding on the myriad trails on the 350-acre ranch and surrounding National Forest. It has one bedroom and a loft accessed by a wrought iron spiral staircase.  It has one bathroom, a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, and wood burning fireplace.

Ponderosa

The Ponderosa cabin sleeps six people and is a stone’s throw from the West Fork of the Bitterroot Rivers that flows through the 350-acre ranch.  The fly fishing is fantastic both in the river for cutthroat trout and on the catch and release private pond that has 22 inch rainbow trout.  A rowboat, canoe and paddleboat are provided for guest use.  The cabin has two bedrooms and a loft, one bathroom, fully-equipped kitchen, living room, and wood burning fireplace.

Homestead

The Homestead cabin has two units.  Upstairs, the Lewis unit sleeps 10 people in two bedrooms and a loft area and has a wood burning fireplace in the living room.  The Clark unit downstairs has a queen bed and rollaway. Both units have fully-stocked kitchens, bathrooms,TVs, WIFI, and washers and dryers.  When not rented, the Homestead is used as a community gathering place with many books, games, DVDs, and toys.

SPECIAL DIRECTIONS

Alta Ranch is a scenic 2-hour drive from the international airport in Missoula, a 5-hour drive from Spokane, a 9-hour drive from Seattle, and a 9-hour drive from Salt Lake City. Driving south on Highway 93, turn right on the West Fork Road (Highway 473) about 3 miles south of Darby. Follow the signs to Painted Rocks Lake. Continue on the West Fork Road around the lake on the east side. Approximately 2 miles past the lake, turn right at the Alta Ranch sign, just before Mile Marker 27. The ranch is located between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone in southwest Montana.
