The highest peak in the Bitterroot Mountain Range, Trapper Peak is an awesome granite spire towering over the Bitterroot Valley. At 10,157 feet, views from the top of rocky ridges and the valley below are quite spectacular.
The hike is 6 miles with 4,000 feet of elevation gain one-way. The first few miles wind in and out of trees with views of Boulder Mountain and Trapper Peak. Trees slowly get smaller until you reach a open boulder field. For the last few miles the trail winds towards the saddle above the treeline. Make the final ascent along an easily traversed ridge. Bring enough water as there is none along the trail. July and August are the best time of year as snow covers much of the trail before July.
